Phonics and Reading
In Year 1, phonics is a key part of our daily learning. We follow the Red Rose Phonics programme, which is taught every day to help children develop strong reading and spelling skills. Through fun, engaging lessons, children learn to recognise sounds, blend them to read words, and segment them to support their writing.
In Year 2, spelling and phonics are taught daily using the Red Rose Spelling programme. These sessions build on the phonics knowledge children have already developed and focus on applying spelling patterns and rules with increasing confidence. Children learn how to spell common exception words, apply spelling rules accurately, and develop strategies to check and improve their own work.
