St Joseph's Roman CatholicPrimary School

To grow daily in God's love, blossoming in His will

Spring 1

Our weekly mathematics activities will now be planned using the White Rose planning documents and maths mastery from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) as a reference. Our planning is adapted to challenge and support every child's ability and to respond to their interests.

This half term, we will make subitising (estimating how many objects are in a small set) skills and knowledge of number bonds to 5 our priority for the reception children. We will also continue practising skills of accurate counting using one-to-one correspondence, understanding the conservation of numbers to 10, recognition of and writing numerals and counting and comparing sets.

We will compare and order the length, height, width and weight of objects, use non-standardised objects to measure them and extend their mathematical vocabulary related to size. Estimation skills will be included in the teaching of size, with children encouraged to make an accurate estimate how many objects long, tall, wide or heavy an object is.

Naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes and their properties will be developed further through a range of creative and construction activities.

The majority of mathematical learning will be done through practical indoor and outdoor activities using natural resources and mathematical equipment. Children will be taught that actions can also be counted.

Children will be taught specific mathematical vocabulary in relation to size, position, direction, shape and comparisons of numbers.
