St Joseph's Roman CatholicPrimary School
To grow daily in God's love, blossoming in His will
In Year 1 and Year 2, we expect children to read daily at home as part of their home learning. Regular reading, even for a short time each day, has a huge impact on children’s progress. It helps to build confidence, improve fluency, develop understanding of new vocabulary, and strengthen comprehension skills.
Sharing books at home also supports the phonics and spelling taught in school and helps children develop a positive attitude towards reading. Listening to your child read, talking about the story, and asking simple questions all help to deepen their understanding. Daily reading practice plays a vital role in helping children become confident, independent readers.
Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please inform a member of the key stage one team if there are any issues. Thank you
In Year 1 and Year 2, children are given weekly spellings to practise at home. These spellings are carefully linked to the phonics and spelling rules being taught in class, helping children to reinforce and apply their learning. Regular practice supports children in becoming more confident and accurate spellers.
We encourage children to practise their spellings little and often throughout the week, using strategies such as saying the word, sounding it out, and writing it in a sentence. Weekly spelling practice plays an important role in supporting children’s reading and writing across the curriculum.
Spelling tests will be every Friday.
